The key difference between our courses and courses offered elsewhere is in the word ‘authentic’.  By authentic we mean, unlike other companies, the skin needling techniques we teach are based upon the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, of which skin needling originates. 

We see too many companies using and teaching modern adaptations of skin needling who have forgotten the core principles upon which the technique was originally developed. Aggressive derma-rolling action, bleeding the skin and using anaesthetic creams are all representations of a poor skin needling technique and companies which offer this sort of training should, in our opinion, be avoided.

The aim of this blog is to explain the meaning and the advantages of purchasing an EU medical device dermaroller as well as how to be sure that is what you have purchased.

What is a Medical dermaroller?

Here we are referring to dermaroller’s which are small hand held skin needling devices which meet the requirements of an EU medical device.

Currently there are only 2 products which meet this criteria including White Lotus’s Lotus Roller.

Dermarollers with needle lengths over 0.5mm fall are classified as class IIa medical devices.

Under the European system in order to gain this classification the manufacturing premises where the dermarollers are produced must be inspected by an Independent Notified body. These groups are independent from the manufacturers and are directly regulated by the independent governments of the European Union. They therefore take their duties very seriously and ensure that all products produced on the premises reach high levels of quality and in the case of needles such as the dermarollers sterility.

The advantages of a Medical Dermaroller?

Currently this is the only independent regulation of the sterility and quality of dermarollers on the market.

Not all dermarollers purchased online or elsewhere have any guarantee of sterility and are purchased at the buyer’s risk.

FDA approved rollers are currently only listed as class 1 medical devices. This is a very different system in which the importers of manufacturers simply self-regulate themselves. Basically they pay a small fee and declare themselves a medical device with no inspection involved. This is definitely not the same guarantee of quality and sterility.

How do you check if your dermaroller is a genuine medical dermaroller?

The simplest way to check is to look for the CE symbol and also to confirm that there is a 4 digit number next to the symbol on the label.

The 4 digit number is the specialised number of the independent body which inspected the manufacturer’s premises.

Please note you need both the symbol and the number to be sure that it is a genuine class IIa medical device.

As discussed earlier there are only 2 companies in the world who have reached this certification. Lotus Roller is one of the products and the other is easy to find.

As a general rule if you purchase a dermaroller from an auction site or online for £10 or so you can probably assume it is fake no matter what is printed on the label.

There are definitely fraudulent dermarollers being sold and a particularly cheap price is often a good give away.

Who Can Medical devices be sold to?

There is a popular myth that medical devices including class IIa dermarollers cannot be sold to the public.

This is simply untrue.

There is no section in the medical device directive which limits who class IIa medical devices can be sold to.

This is a commercial and marketing decision made on the part of the manufacturer and should never be mistaken for law.
